A Taste Of My Life – genius programming

Nigel SlaterIn a world of celebrity where no-one famous appears on any medium without having something to plug, the current series of A Taste Of My Life on BBC2, fronted by the god-like Nigel Slater is an oasis among a sea of mediocrity and vapidity.

The format is very simple. Nigel Slater talks to someone famous about their life and the food they remember from certain periods of it.

There’s a bit of cooking, but nothing as serious as full-on recipes, and a little bit of video footage of friends and family to break up the show, but to all intents and purposes, this is just Nigel and A. Celeb yakking about food and their memories of it.

What makes the show so brilliant is that most of the famous people talk about things that we can all remember from our own childhoods and younger days: lemon meringue pie, Angel Delight, shepherd’s pie, fish and chips, vegetable curry, tuna pasta.

Slater himself initially seems a bit of a bumbling interviewer, but actually he’s superb at coaxing out little nuggets of gold simply by being passionate himself about similar experiences from his own childhood.

This series has included gems from people such as Tamsin Greig, Jo Brand, Denis Lawson, Sue Johnston and Meera Syal – not always people you’d instantly be interested in, but the show makes them interesting and you get some sort of insight into their lives that most interviewers (be it print or TV) never manage to show.

The joy of the iPlayer means that there’s still a chance to catch up on some last week’s episodes you may have missed, so please do yourself a favour and have a butcher’s.

The Apprentice’s Lucinda got it wrong

Lucinda Ledgerwood from The ApprenticeSo, according to Lucinda Ledgerwood, she was fired from The Apprentice last night because of her accent.

Horseshit! She was fired because she was a square peg in a round hole – she’s too leftfield and too confrontational.

If her ‘poshness’ was the reason she was bullied and hated by the other contestants, then by the same logic, Raef would have been despised just as much.

But, er, correct me if I’m wrong, no-one had a bad word to say about him. So, Lucinda is clearly looking for excuses.

The Apprentice: Likely Lads all over again

Raef - fired from The ApprenticeI love The Apprentice – it always takes me a while to ‘warm’ to the characters every year (and let’s face it, it’s tough to warm to some of the egos that apply to the show), but it’s far more entertaining than many other ‘reality’ shows on TV.

I also adore Sky+ – as anyone who has it knows, it’s revolutionised TV watching and means in our house we never face a night being forced to watch 10 Years Younger or Pet Rescue or some other such naff ‘lifestyle’ programme.

Unfortunately, The Apprentice and Sky+ aren’t happy bed-partners, as it were.

For various reasons this series, I’ve not been able to watch The Apprentice on the night. Yesterday, for example, The Champions League final was on, so I decided to watch that in preference.

Now, I don’t actively try to avoid knowing who’s been fired if I don’t watch it straightaway, unlike The Likely Lads in the famous episode from the 70s, when they spend all day avoiding news about the result of the England football match, only to find out it was called off because of a waterlogged pitch.

But this morning, as soon as I turned on the radio, the DJ immediately started talking about last night’s episode and gave the game away. Aaarrgghh!

I know there’s more to it than the firing, but knowing who it is before you start simply means that you know which team loses and it spoils everything.

Anyway, I felt a bit sorry for Raef. It seemed to me that Sirallan took against him because he was posh, no matter what he might say. I think Michael deserved to go far more, especially after Kosher-gate the other week!
